With Spring just around the corner (here's hoping), I have begun my seasonal tradition of rummaging for trusty spring favourites, magazine flicking for inspiration (apparently bows and rattan are back!), and ruminating over colours/patterns/textures for the upcoming season.

Usually for me this starts with a lengthy browse through my wardrobe (just to overcome any Closet Amnesia - see separate post).

After that, I will have a browse around - not only at shop-fronts, Instagram accounts I like and the occasional magazine, but at people I see, the colours outdoors, anything that gets me in the mood to think about what I wear - and how. I tend to scribble little notes about what needs repairing in my wardrobe, what (if anything) needs replacing (usually worn out sandals and flats from previous years), and what potential "new" items might keep things fresh. For me, "new" always comes in inverted commas; I usually write something vague on the list like "could do with a floaty cotton / pleated skirt", as purchases are thrift-permitting, and you can't be too prescriptive if you're a charity shopper. Yes, some things just have to come from an actual shop where you can check they have what you need, and in your size, nip out and purchase. BUT, where's the enjoyment in it? For me, the best part is hunting down a much less attainable item that everyone and their Nan is probably unlikely to be buying. I want to look like me, wearing my style, not like I've done a magazine cut-out frenzy and simply replicated a look.

Personally, this year, I am really enjoying neutral tonal shades of cream and beige. I also love blush pinks. Bows are always a firm favourite (whether anyone else likes them or not) and rattan / wicker / straw pieces get me in the mood for (dare-I-say-it) the arrival of Summer.

If you like them, mood boards (digital or otherwise) can be a really good way to bring your ideas together and focus your look. I tend to snap photos of things I like and group them in a folder on my phone for easy reference when out and about (usually thrifting) or when staring into my wardrobe so that I don't get distracted or change course. Believe me, this prevents the inevitable "off-piste" purchase of for example, a neon skirt when you were planning a generally pastel toned colour palette for the season (or vice versa!)

I also love pearls, and have a couple of pearl pieces that will be making an appearance soon! Many of the above items can continue being worn well into summer (especially where I live up North!)
